Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Rural electrification projects play a vital role in enhancing the livelihoods of people in rural areas by improving access to electricity, which is essential for various economic activities. In Sabon Birni Local Government Area (LGA) of Sokoto State, electricity access remains a significant challenge for small-scale enterprises. Without reliable electricity, these enterprises often struggle with issues such as production inefficiency, high operational costs, and an inability to expand their businesses.

The introduction of rural electrification projects has the potential to transform the business landscape by providing small-scale enterprises with the power needed for production, refrigeration, lighting, and communication. This study aims to assess the effect of rural electrification on small-scale enterprises in Sabon Birni, focusing on how access to electricity has affected productivity, profitability, and business expansion.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Although rural electrification has been prioritized by the government, its effects on small-scale businesses in Sabon Birni are not well documented. Small businesses, which are the backbone of rural economies, continue to face significant challenges due to unreliable power supply. This study will investigate the role of rural electrification in improving the performance and sustainability of small-scale enterprises in the area.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of rural electrification on the productivity and profitability of small-scale enterprises in Sabon Birni.

  2. To evaluate how access to electricity has affected business operations and expansion opportunities.

  3. To identify the challenges that businesses still face despite the implementation of rural electrification projects.

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  3. Despite rural electrification, small-scale enterprises still face challenges such as erratic power supply and high energy costs.

This study will provide valuable insights for policymakers and development agencies on the importance of rural electrification in supporting small-scale businesses. It will also contribute to strategies aimed at improving rural economies through better access to electricity.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on small-scale enterprises in Sabon Birni Local Government Area, Sokoto State, and their access to rural electrification. Limitations include challenges in measuring the direct impact of electrification on business profitability and operations.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Rural Electrification: The provision of electricity to rural areas to support various sectors, including businesses, education, and healthcare.
